Recording A Document While The Courthouse is Closed to the Public
Although the Morgan County Courthouse is closed to the public, due to COVID-19, the Probate Office staff is working. Anyone needing to file a document in the Probate Office may do so by mail. The mailing address is Morgan County Probate Court, P.O. Box 848, Decatur, AL 35602. Please call our office during normal business hours (8:00 A.M. - 4:30 P.M.), prior to mailing your document and a Probate Clerk will gladly assist you in figuring recording costs. Our general office number is (256) 351-4675.
Any document conveying an interest in real property must be an original document for it to be recorded. The original document must be accompanied by the appropriate recording cost (check or money order). You will also need to include a self-addressed, stamped envelope so that the original document or certified copy can be returned to you after the document is recorded.
the above information also pertains to Marriage Licenses. If returning a marriage license by mail make sure you include a sticky note with your phone number in case we have any questions, payment (check) of $78.00 for the marriage license, and then add $4.00 for each certified license copy you want (most people do one, which would bring your check total to $84.00). Again, please include a self-addressed, stamped envelope so we can send you your certified marriage license to you.
